It is thought that the quality of cultivated agarwood is not as good as the natural one. Some people even say that all planted agarwood is artificial and full of toxic chemicals. Are these opinions right?

The answer is YES, and… NO
Cultivated agarwood is collected after 2-3 years, while natural agarwood remains in the wide aquilaria trees during up to 10 years. Thus, the oil quality in natural agarwood is always better, which results in 3 or 4 times higher trading price.
Despite the artificial foundation, cultivated agarwood products are absolutely chemical free.
There is no dirty trick, no excessive usage of chemical fertilizers, and no harmful substances application. The plantation process simply duplicates that of the nature, i.e. physically damaging the tree with the help of blades, drilling holes or fire damage. Although there are injections of fungal compound similar to ants’ hormone to keep the wounds open, they are subject to a close scrutiny to ensure appropriate content. Also, at the time when agarwood is extracted, the compound has already worn off.

Because of an increase in demand for agarwood, some manufacturers have produced low-quality products as a way of cost- and time saving. Agarwood chips and bracelets can be soaked with artificial oil, and essential oil is mixed with other kinds of fragrance.
It is not easy to distinguish between pure agarwood and the mixed one. Therefore, consumers should know the brand with high reputation as well as the attributes of high-quality agarwood before entering into any business transaction regarding to agarwood.
