Agarwood Oil Distillation Process at OUD VIETNAM

Agarwood oil, also known as oud oil, is created through a meticulous process that requires carefully selected raw materials, precise distillation, and time for the aroma to develop.

At OUD VIETNAM (OUDVN), we use steam distillation to extract aromatic oil from agarwood. The process combines carefully prepared agarwood with a controlled system of heating, condensation, and separation to collect the resulting oud oil.

1. Selecting Agarwood for Oil Distillation

The quality of oud oil begins with the raw material.

Agarwood used for distillation can come from naturally formed or cultivated sources. As natural agarwood is increasingly rare and highly valuable, cultivated agarwood provides a more stable source of raw material for oil production.

Several factors influence the characteristics of the agarwood before it even enters the distillation process. These include the quality of the Aquilaria trees, soil conditions, growing environment, and the characteristics of the agarwood formed within the tree.

Careful raw material selection is therefore an essential first step in producing quality agarwood oil.

2. Preparing the Agarwood

Once the agarwood has been selected, it is prepared for distillation.

The wood goes through several stages:

Aquilaria wood → Cutting into sections → Chopping into smaller pieces → Coarse grinding → Fine grinding

Grinding the material into smaller particles prepares it for the extraction stage and allows it to be processed more effectively during distillation.

3. How Steam Distillation Extracts Agarwood Oil

After preparation, the ground agarwood is placed into the electric stainless-steel distillation vessel.

During heating, steam passes through the agarwood material and carries its aromatic compounds into the condensation system.

The vapor then travels through a cooling unit. As the temperature decreases, it condenses back into liquid, producing a mixture of water and agarwood oil.

This liquid is collected in a specialized separation vessel, where the oil is separated from the water and collected for the next stage of production.

The complete process follows three main principles:

Extraction → Condensation → Separation

This allows the aromatic components contained within agarwood to be gradually collected as oud oil.

4. Agarwood Oil Distillation System at OUDVN

OUDVN uses a modern distillation system designed to improve production efficiency and maintain better control throughout the extraction process.

The equipment can operate at pressures of up to approximately 2 kg/cm² and temperatures of up to 150°C.

A single batch of agarwood oil can require approximately 48 to 72 hours of distillation, depending on the amount of raw material and the equipment used.

Once distillation is complete, the collected oil is filtered to remove impurities and then stored under appropriate dry and cool conditions.

The use of a modern production system helps reduce processing time compared with more traditional methods while improving production efficiency and supporting a more stable output.

OUDVN currently operates 10 agarwood oil production machines, with an estimated total production capacity of approximately 10 liters per month.

5. Traditional Agarwood Oil Distillation

Traditional steam distillation is another method used to extract aromatic oil from agarwood.

The process begins by fully soaking the agarwood in water. This stage can last from one to three months, allowing the material to remain submerged before distillation begins.

The soaked agarwood is then heated in a large distillation vessel. As the water is heated, steam carries aromatic compounds from the agarwood into the condensation system.

When the vapor cools, it returns to a liquid state. The resulting oil-and-water mixture is then collected and separated to obtain the agarwood oil.

Traditional distillation requires close attention throughout the process and generally takes more time to produce the final oil.

Today, stainless-steel vessels can also be used in this type of distillation. The process may be carried out under reduced pressure or vacuum conditions, allowing the operating temperature to be lowered to below 100°C. This approach helps reduce exposure to high temperatures during extraction.

Whether traditional or modern equipment is used, agarwood oil extraction remains a time-intensive process that requires a significant amount of raw material.

6. From Freshly Distilled Oil to Mature Oud Oil

The process does not end when the oil leaves the distillation system.

Freshly distilled agarwood oil requires time for its aromatic profile to stabilize and develop.

At OUDVN, the oil is typically allowed to mature for at least one month. During this period, the aroma gradually settles and becomes more complete.

This maturation stage is an important part of the overall production process. Just as the extraction itself takes time, the finished oud oil also benefits from a period of rest before its aromatic characteristics are fully evaluated.

7. Agarwood Oil Analysis with GC-MS

Beyond sensory evaluation, agarwood oil can also be analyzed using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

GC-MS combines gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to separate and identify different chemical compounds within a sample. The technique can detect compounds even when they are present in relatively small amounts.

Agarwood oil contains a complex mixture of aromatic compounds. Components identified in OUDVN's material include α-agarofuran, β-agarofuran, iso-dihydro agarofuran, agarospirol, and dihydro agarofuran, among others.

This complex composition contributes to the distinctive aromatic character associated with agarwood oil.

8. Agarwood Oil Production at OUD VIETNAM

OUDVN's modern agarwood oil production system was installed in 2023, strengthening our ability to manage the distillation process and maintain a more stable monthly supply.

Combined with a stable source of agarwood raw materials, the production system enables OUDVN to serve both customers and business partners seeking Vietnamese agarwood oil.

Our factory operates under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, supporting a structured approach to production and quality management.

From selecting the agarwood and preparing the raw material to 48–72 hours of distillation, oil separation, filtration, and maturation, producing oud oil is a process that requires time, careful control, and experience at every stage.

Through the combination of Vietnamese agarwood resources and modern distillation technology, OUD VIETNAM continues to develop Vietnamese oud oil with a focus on quality, consistency, and reliable supply.
